After spending a few years with the Volksrods.com guys I decided it was time to build my 'volks rod'. I had seen a lot of great starts, good ideas an even some outstanding finished projects. But I knew I did not want the typical flat back with red rims bug. I wanted something different.
I set out to build a fun bug but with a twist. I love the Tiki theme and all it entails but being land locked in Arkansas doesn't do much for me, so I started the Tiki Tub. The Tiki Tub will have all the 'options' of a rat rod, the extended front suspension, no fenders and outrageous custom touches. There will be a removal thatch roof, coconut taillights, and turn signals. W lid just to piss off a few purists. Tiki head shift knob on an extended shifter. The paint will be a satin teal with hibiscus print on the rockers. Bamboo will replace all the stock side/hood/dash and running board trim. The dash will be one a off with center mounted '66 Ghia cluster. The front seat will be a bench to match the back, both covered in Hawaiian pint material. The door panels will be bamboo mat material. The carpet will be replaced with a coco mat. The rear storage area will be half lockable dry storage, the other half a built in ice chest. Since the front end will be modified the gas tank will be replaced with a center fill spun aluminum tan, just forward of the wire cover with a cowl mounted filler. the rims will be 4.5x15 front and 8x15 out back 'old school' slotted aluminum rims with port-a-walls. the engine will be kept simple, 1776 with baby Webers, and low slung chrome buggy pipes.
